Enhancing Lives with Reminiscence Therapy at Pacific Care
At Pacific Care, we prioritise reminiscence therapy, especially for residents with dementia. This approach improves mood, reduces loneliness, and enhances cognitive function by encouraging reflection on past experiences.
Our care homes and day care service are dedicated to fostering this beneficial practice. We have specialised reminiscence rooms filled with nostalgic items and themed reminiscence boxes, such as old crafts and grooming kits, to evoke cherished memories and promote meaningful interactions.
Mosswood’s reminiscence room, Memory Lane, opened in March last year, is a testament to our dedication. Masterfully put together by team leader Jackie, this room is filled with vintage items, including a resident’s first Singer sewing machine, a record player, and a stunning red polka dot swing dress. Vintage-style suitcases, acting as memory boxes, contain themed items like embroidery, knitting, and personal grooming kits. Residents select a box, sparking conversations and reflections on their past.
Our other Pacific Care homes also have their own reminiscence rooms and regularly engage in reminiscence activities to ensure all residents benefit from these meaningful experiences.
Reminiscence therapy not only boosts self-esteem and social connections but also helps residents maintain their sense of identity. By engaging in activities like life review therapy and conversational reminiscing, our residents experience a greater sense of belonging and emotional well-being.
During #DementiaActionWeek (May 13-17), you can support those living with dementia by engaging them in conversations about their past, showing them old photos, playing their favourite music or involving them in activities they once enjoyed. Listening attentively and validating their experiences can make a significant difference.
By integrating these practices into daily life, we help our residents feel connected, valued, and understood. Join us in making a positive impact this #DementiaActionWeek.
