Implementing the Safe Staffing Act: What It Means for Our Care Services

As of April 1, 2024, the Health and Care (Staffing) (Scotland) Act 2019 has been in effect, ushering in crucial changes to ensure safe and effective staffing within the healthcare sector. This ground-breaking legislation sets out critical requirements for safe staffing across all health and care services in Scotland, marking a significant milestone in ensuring high-quality care for all service users.

    Key Provisions of the Act

The Health and Care (Staffing) (Scotland) Act 2019 places a legal duty on NHS and care providers to ensure that suitably qualified staff are always present in the right numbers to deliver safe and effective care. The Act also imposes a duty on the Scottish Government to ensure there are sufficient numbers of registered nurses, midwives, and medical professionals available to enable employers to meet their staffing obligations.

Pacific Care’s Commitment to Safe Staffing

At Pacific Care, we wholeheartedly support this landmark legislation and are proud to share that we have already been operating well within the principles set out by the Act. Here’s how we are leading the way in safe staffing practices:

    1. Advanced Safe Staffing Tools: We use a safe staffing tool that has been recognised by the Care Inspectorate (CI). Our implementation of IoRN allows us to effectively manage and monitor our staffing levels to ensure optimal care for our residents.
    2. Exceeding Safe Staffing Standards: Pacific Care consistently maintains staffing levels that are well above the average safe staffing thresholds. This commitment ensures that our residents receive the highest standard of care at all times.
    3. Daily Risk Assessments: We conduct daily risk assessments on our staffing levels. This proactive approach helps us mitigate any potential risks by ensuring immediate actions are taken if any staff members are unavailable. By doing so, we can promptly bring in additional support to cover any gaps and maintain the continuity of care.
    4. Comprehensive Impact Assessments: Our regular impact assessments ensure that our staffing strategies are effective and responsive to the needs of our residents. This ongoing evaluation helps us to continuously improve our care delivery.

The Benefits of Low Staff Turnover

One of the critical factors contributing to our success is our low staff turnover and attrition rates, which are significantly below the national average. Lower staff turnover reduces the risk associated with frequent changes in care personnel and enhances the overall operation of our homes. Stability within our team not only fosters a safer and more reliable care environment but also allows our staff to build stronger, more meaningful relationships with our residents.

    Looking Ahead

As Safe Staffing Act comes into effect, Pacific Care is fully prepared and committed to meeting and exceeding its requirements. We believe that the Act will bring about positive changes across the health and care sector in Scotland, ensuring safer and more effective care for all.

We are proud of our dedicated staff and their unwavering commitment to providing exceptional care. Together, we will continue to uphold the highest standards of staffing and care, ensuring the well-being and safety of our residents at all times.
