Nutrition and Hydration Week: How Pacific Care is Getting Involved

At Pacific Care, we are always looking for ways to enhance the wellbeing of our residents, and this year's Nutrition and Hydration Week provides the perfect opportunity to do just that!

What is Nutrition and Hydration Week?

Nutrition and Hydration Week is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of food and drink in maintaining health and wellbeing, particularly for vulnerable individuals such as older adults. Originally launched to promote nutrition and hydration best practices across health and social care settings, the campaign encourages fun, engaging, and educational activities that highlight the role of good nutrition and proper hydration in overall health. This year, the week takes place from March 11th to 17th, 2025.

Lillyburn: A Week of Exciting Activities

Lillyburn Care Home has embraced the spirit of Nutrition and Hydration Week with a full week of special events, ensuring that residents enjoy delicious, nutritious food while staying well-hydrated. Here’s what’s in store:

    • Monday – St. Patrick’s Day Brunch: Residents will kick off the week with a festive Irish-inspired brunch, complete with traditional favourites.
    • Tuesday – Milkshake Taste Test Day: A fun and interactive session where residents get to sample and rate a variety of milkshake flavours.
    • Wednesday – Global Tea Party: This will be the highlight of the week! The team is going all out to celebrate global flavours, offering an assortment of international desserts, a European-themed lunch, and an Asian-inspired dinner. Chef John has been hard at work planning an impressive spread.
    • Thursday – Thirsty Thursday: Encouraging hydration with a variety of treats including ice lollies, sorbets, ice poles, and creative water-based drinks.
    • Friday – Fruity Friday: A delicious selection of fresh fruit treats and smoothies to celebrate the benefits of natural sweetness.
    • Saturday – "Sundae" Saturday: A delightful end to the week with residents creating their own custom ice cream sundaes.

Stanely Park’s Plans for the Week

Stanely Park is also embracing the national event with a series of fun activities tailored to residents’ tastes:

    • Monday – Big Breakfast: A hearty and nutritious breakfast to start the week on a high note.
    • Wednesday – Mad Hatter’s Tea Party: A fun-filled tea party featuring a variety of teas and treats.
    • Thursday – Thirsty Thursday: A refreshing juice bar complemented by a variety of fruit snacks, encouraging hydration in a tasty way.

    Project Milkshake: Enhancing Resident Wellbeing

Both Lillyburn and Stanely Park Care Homes are proud participants in Project Milkshake, an initiative designed to improve residents' nutrition through fortified milkshakes as part of their daily routine.

By incorporating fortified milkshakes into everyday care, we have seen significant benefits, including improved BMI scores, a reduction in falls, lower MUST (Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool) scores, and a decrease in the need for oral nutritional supplements. This proactive approach not only enhances the wellbeing of our residents but also reinforces our commitment to delivering high-quality nutrition and hydration support.

Nutrition and Hydration Week is an excellent opportunity to highlight the importance of healthy eating and staying hydrated—and our care homes are making sure it’s a week to remember. We’re excited to see our residents enjoying these delicious and interactive experiences, all while promoting their health and wellbeing.
